Why Silencer Shop Makes Buying a Suppressor Easier
Oct 18, 2026
Buying a suppressor used to mean paper forms, ink fingerprint cards, passport photos, mailed envelopes and months of wondering where your application was. The paperwork still exists, especially in NFA states like Connecticut, but it doesn't have to be a headache. Buying through Silencer Shop and a "Powered By Silencer Shop" dealer turns most of it into a guided online process, with one trip to the store for fingerprints and one to pick up.
What Silencer Shop does for you
- It fills out the Form 4 for you. You answer the registration questions once, and Silencer Shop generates your ATF Form 4 after checkout. Its team reviews your information before anything goes to ATF, so typos don't delay you.
- Fingerprints at a kiosk instead of ink cards. Silencer Shop's kiosk takes FBI-approved digital fingerprints that work with ATF eForms. It can scan your driver's license to fill in your ID details, and you only have to scan your prints once for future purchases.
- Your photo goes in from your phone. Upload a passport-style photo through the Silencer Shop app or website. It stays valid for a year, so buying a second suppressor is quicker.
- Signing takes about 15 minutes. You get an e-signature request by email and certify the application alongside your dealer, using your own eForms login.
- Simple trust options. The Single Shot NFA Gun Trust ($24.95) covers one item and is set up during checkout. The Single Shot Unlimited trust ($129.95) covers multiple items. You can add or remove trustees later at no extra cost.
- You can always see where things stand. The My Orders dashboard shows your current step and flags anything that's missing. Silencer Shop also publishes current ATF wait times.
- Inventory moves to your local dealer. If your dealer doesn't have the suppressor you want, Silencer Shop handles the dealer-to-dealer Form 3 transfer so it's waiting at your local shop.
Step by step: buying through a Silencer Shop dealer
This follows Silencer Shop's own buyer checklist for NFA-state buyers.
- Create two accounts. Set up a Silencer Shop account and an ATF eForms account. Your full legal name and email address must match exactly on both. Save your eForms username, password and PIN somewhere safe.
- Pick your suppressor and your dealer. Shop online or in the store, and select your local Powered By Silencer Shop dealer before you check out.
- Answer the registration questions. Enter your personal details once. Silencer Shop uses them to generate your Form 4.
- Choose how you'll own it. Pick Individual, Trust or Corporation. A Single Shot Trust can be added right at checkout.
- Upload your photo. Submit a passport-style photo through the app or website. The kiosk doesn't take photos.
- Scan your fingerprints. Use the kiosk at your dealer (a kiosk code from the dealer speeds this up). You can also mail fingerprint cards or send an electronic fingerprint file.
- Silencer Shop reviews your file. They check everything before it goes anywhere. If something is missing, the My Orders dashboard shows you what.
- The suppressor goes to your dealer. If it isn't already in stock, Silencer Shop transfers it to your dealer.
- Certify and submit with your dealer. You'll get an e-signature request by email. Then you and your dealer certify and submit the Form 4 to ATF in about 15 minutes, using your own eForms username and PIN. Never share those credentials with anyone, including the shop.
- Wait for approval. eForms sends you an "In Process" notice, and both you and your dealer get an email when ATF approves the transfer.
- Pick it up. Call ahead, bring your ID, complete Form 4473 and take your suppressor home. Keep a copy of your approved Form 4.
Why it matters in Connecticut
In 27 "free states," ATF's October 2026 policy means a suppressor can now transfer on a 4473 and background check alone. Connecticut isn't one of them. State law (§ 53a-211) still makes an approved Form 4 the clearest proof that you're allowed to own a suppressor, so Connecticut buyers still go through the full process. Silencer Shop lists Connecticut as an NFA state where a Form 4 is still required for suppressors and AOWs.
That's exactly where Silencer Shop's system helps most. The paperwork is unavoidable here, so it pays to have it prepared, checked and tracked for you. Silencer Shop is also the company whose foundation brought Silencer Shop Foundation v. ATF, the lawsuit behind this year's changes, and it has said it will keep pushing to widen the ruling.
The tax stamp is now $0, and your fingerprints carry over to future purchases. A second suppressor takes a fraction of the effort of the first.
